JOB HUNT!

imagesThe phobia of graduation usually starts at the beginning of second semester examinations.

Final year students begin to ponder and wonder about the next phase of life.

And the question arise,

how do I get a job?

In this case, there are different categories of students..

The first ones are those born with silver spoons in their mouths. They have no phobia at all. The family business is available for them, or they probably would inherit another business from one of their relative. Most of them travel abroad immediately to study for masters and PhD, everything sorted,no worries.

The second category are the first class and second class upper students. They have just little fear also. They are the brains, the efiko of the department. Because their grades will probably land them a job position in shell or chevron, or help them secure scholarship opportunities to various institutions  outside the country. And so they spend time reading and trying to maintain the grades.

You see the ones with second class lower and third class. They are very humble. I call them  the entrepreneurs. They are the goal getters. Because they believe their grades can’t get them a good  job  or a scholarship admission. They acquire skills, develop themselves, get involved in a business and start earning money, howbeit little.

The third category are the ones with the “connections”. They know people in high places. They have one uncle or aunt somewhere that knows the senator of the state, who would help them get a job anywhere they choose. And so preparation for the outside world is little..these just have about 50% phobia.

Reality then hit!

They all graduate, the first class and  second class upper owners begin to realise that the students with connections have dominated the labour market ,filling up vacancy positions that should have been theirs. For some their grades might get them an interview, and probably they had a  high score in the test ,but once the M.D informs the H.R.M of his niece who is also applying. They lose the job.

So, been desperate, they go to the second class lower and the third class owners who have built themselves and beg them for jobs, because they didn’t have time to create one.

Which category are you?

  1. Nice right up…

    Well my view on this is simple, when a student enters school, he must have the mindset of either of three things;

    1. Study
    2. Business
    3. Connect

As a student, you decide whether you want to study hard to get a first class, focus on job or do business by the side.. If you can’t combine both, then pick one and follow through with it.. But connection is an important part, don’t belittle anyone, get the connect, whether as a scholar or entrepreneur. Don’t complain that you ain’t born with a silver spoon or no connection, make connections.. Take advantage of the senator son in your class, the oil company owner’s son..you can’t see the “big men” but you have their children among you..

I didn’t do all these but i have learnt now as a graduate..

    Nice update..

  2. A great piece indeed. The present Era in Nigeria seems to reward the creative mind who can make something it of nothing or those who can see a problem in the society and solve them and thus creating wealth. It also rewards those who are well connected no matter how much or less they have to offer. You know what my advice is that just be creative and combine creativity with connection. At least, try to know the brother to the Uncle of someone who knows a big man that can land you a big hit and the most essential thing is to believe in your God and all will be well. We all going to make it
